Austin City Limits Travel Checklist: Lodging, Ground Transport and Dining for Festival Weekend

Austin City Limits turns the city into one of the hardest places in the country to book a room, find a ride or land a dinner table. The 2026 festival has wrapped, which makes now the right time to plan for next year. Travelers who lock in lodging and transport early pay less and stress less. This checklist covers the three decisions that make or break a festival weekend: where to stay, how to get around, and where to eat.

Before you book anything

Settle the basics first, because every other choice depends on them.

  • Which weekend or weekends. ACL has historically run across two October weekends. Pick your days before you search hotels.
  • Your arrival and departure window. Festival-day flights and Sunday-night departures are the busiest. Fly in Thursday or Friday morning and leave Monday if you can.
  • Your group size and budget per night. Shared lodging changes the math, and so does a ride-share split.
  • Your ticket status. Confirm tickets and gate details through the official festival channels, and check the festival’s own transportation page for current shuttle and drop-off rules.

Lodging checklist

Rooms near the festival grounds at Zilker Park fill early, and rates climb as the weekend approaches. Treat lodging as the first booking, not the last.

  1. Book as soon as dates are set. Choose a flexible or free-cancellation rate, then rebook if prices drop.
  2. Compare three zones. Downtown offers walkable dining and nightlife. South Congress and the South Austin side put you closer to the park. Farther-out suburbs cost less but add ride time and surge risk.
  3. Check the walk or shuttle route. A hotel that looks close on a map may sit behind closed streets on festival days.
  4. Look at the full price. Add parking, resort fees and taxes before comparing.
  5. Confirm late checkout. A Sunday or Monday departure after a late set is far more comfortable with it.

Ground transport checklist

Road closures, packed drop-off zones and heavy post-show demand make this the most underplanned part of the weekend.

  • Plan your route in and out separately. Getting there is easy. Getting home at night is the hard part.
  • Use public options where they exist. CapMetro has offered special festival bus routes and shuttle connections in past years. Check current routes close to the date.
  • Walk or bike for short distances. From nearby neighborhoods this is often the fastest way in.
  • Pre-plan ride-share pickup points. Agree on a meeting spot away from the main exits, and leave a few minutes before the final set ends.
  • Rental cars are a trade-off. They help for airport runs and day trips, but parking near the park is limited and costly. Book one only for the days you need it.
  • Airport transfer. Decide in advance how you will get from Austin-Bergstrom to your hotel, especially on Friday afternoon.

Dining checklist

Restaurants fill quickly on festival weekends, and walk-in waits can run long.

  1. Reserve dinner before you land. Prime evening slots go first.
  2. Build meals around set times. Eat early before a headliner, and book a late table or choose a late-night spot for after.
  3. Pick one splurge meal. One memorable reservation beats several rushed ones.
  4. Eat a real lunch. Festival food lines move slowly during peak hours.
  5. Keep a backup. Save two nearby alternatives in case a table falls through.

Packing and day-of essentials

  • A refillable water bottle, sunscreen and comfortable, broken-in shoes
  • A portable phone charger and a screenshot of your tickets
  • Cash or a card for vendors, plus a small bag that meets festival rules
  • Layers, since Austin evenings can cool off after hot afternoons

The master timeline

  • Several months out: pick dates, book lodging with free cancellation, book flights.
  • One to two months out: plan ground transport, reserve rental car if needed, book key dinners.
  • One week out: confirm shuttle routes, pickup points and reservations, and check the forecast.
  • Festival weekend: travel with buffer time and keep your plan in one place.
